WildFly hosts a variety of festive fly fishing gatherings and online competitions every year. South Africa’s premier fly fishing event is undoubtedly the Corporate Trophy Challenge, usually fully subscribed within days of registrations opening. The Kamberg Trout Festival and the Notties Trout Invitational are two other enjoyable tournaments that we facilitate, giving anglers the opportunity to target trophy trout on private waters.

EXTRA SPECIAL FISHING
You often overhear clandestine talk of favorite fishing holes; waters holding fish that as the years pass become folklore, and ever since I was able to discern that said holes weren’t those where the men congregated after fishing, to loosen their tongues with a wee dram, I’ve been on a quest to discover their haunts. With the number of game fish that have fallen prey to the fly surpassing those that haven’t, you can’t be blamed for forgetting about trout for a while but fortunately the autumn that falls into winter conjures these wily fish to the surface of our attention.
Aliens they may be considered by the misguided but they’re not as nearly as strange as their pursuers and once a season a troop of campaigners descend upon the hills of Nottingham Road, to reacquaint themselves with an extra special friend.
The Legendary watering hole of Notties Hotel hosts the congregation where the festivities, sponsored by Bells, generally ensures that the trout have little to worry about for the first session.
The First Leg in any fishing festival will inevitably catch the fish by surprise as the rainbows are largely uneducated as to the difference between a tied fly and real meal. So the teams proceeded to take advantage of the unusually calm conditions and made the proverbial hay with 356 healthy specimens being netted.
During the 2nd Leg, the fish were clearly very active, seeking out partners to continue their cold bloodline, which proved irritating for the angler whose fly was studiously ignored, but thoughts of a 10 pound trout and a R200 000 Ski Boat teased them back to the water. It’s a fine line between the party of a boys weekend and actual fishing time. It was obviously the fishing time that was sacrificed resulting in only 237 catches recorded.
But it was the 3rd Leg where the rod pres-sure took it’s toll! Fly patterns were re-duced to the miniscule as the fly wise fish became ever so selective and despite flogging the water with intent, only 206 trout were fooled. In total, throughout the legs 799 rainbow trout were meas-ured and released still giving this festive crew a respectable average of 5 fish per rod.
The Challenge is a premier CRM activity on our annual calendar, it gives our group the opportunity to support our client, …. and facilitates a networking platform to socialize with business part-ners. The event is fun, competitive and exciting – an adventure of the highest order.
